Maxim Mikhailov was born in Moscow to a famous operatic family. He is the grandson of the legendary Maxim Dormidontovich Mikhailov, who is considered one of the greatest Russian basses of the Bolshoi. In 1987 Maxim Mikhailov won the Glinka Vocal Competition and 1993 he won the International Belvedere Competition in Vienna which launched his international career. From 1994 -1996, Mr. Mikhailov appeared in Salzburg in Boris Godunov under Claudio Abbado, made his debut in Nantes as Prince Khovansky in Mussorgsky’s Khovanschchina and performed with De Nederlandse in Tchaikovsky’s Mazepa and Shostakovich’s The Nose. In 1996 made his debut with the Royal Opera House Covent Garden as Masetto in Don Giovanni and followed this with debuts at the Houston Grand Opera and the Wiener Volksoper, where he performed Sarastro in Mozart’s “The Magic Flute.” Since 1999, he has appeared with all of the major opera houses of the world including the Paris Opera, the De Norske Opera in Oslo, the Finnish National Opera, Teatro Comunale di Bologna, the Irish National Opera in Dublin, the Glyndebourne Opera Festival, Teatro San Carlo in Naples, the German State Opera in Berlin, the Teatro La Fenice, Venice and La Scala. He has appeared with the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra, the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Age of Enlightment Orchestra, the RIAS-Choir, the London Philharmonic, the Russian National Orchestra under Vladimir Jurowski . He has recorded for EMI and Harmonia Mundi , among others. In 2010, Mr. Mikhailov made his Metropolitan Opera debut in Verdi’s “Stiffelio” and later, as Polonius in Ambrose Thomas' rarely performed "Hamlet". In 2011, he sang the role of Hans Schwarz in the Glyndebourne Opera's production of Der Meistersinger von Nuremburg. This is his third year at Northern Lights. In 2010 he sang the baritone lead in a fully staged version of "Carmina Burana". He made his directorial debut last year in NLMF's highly acclaimed production of "Gianni Schicchi", in which he also sang the title role. |
