What is the Northern Lights Music Festival?
The Northern Lights Music Festival (NLMF) is a three-week classical music celebration held each July in Minnesota’s Iron Range. The festival presents symphonic and chamber concerts, opera performances, and a training program for young musicians from around the world.
Where Does the Festival Take Place?
Performances are held in venues across northeastern Minnesota, including Aurora, Virginia, Chisholm, Ely, and surrounding communities. The festival’s home base is Mesabi East High School in Aurora.
When Does the Festival Take Place
The festival is an annual event and typically runs the first three weeks in July (July 1 through July 24), with multiple performances and events each week. The full schedule is posted in spring at northernlightsmusic.org.
What Can I Expect to Hear and See at the Festival?
Each season usually features two symphonic concerts including a Fourth of July concert, multiple chamber music performances by members of our artist faculty and students from our Young Artists Program, as well as a fully-produced, full length professional opera. Lectures, tours and other community events are also featured.
Who Performs at Northern Lights?
Our performers include local professional musicians, emerging and established opera singers, members of our internationally renowned faculty, as well as young prize-winning students from our Young Artist Program.
Where Can I Buy Tickets
Tickets are usually available at the end of May, and can be purchsed online. Tickets for the opera and symphonic concets may also be available at certain locations which will be listed on our website under tickets.
Are there discounts available?
Tickets for students under the age of 18 are always discounted. Season passes are also available offering substantial savings for the season as a whole. Groups of 15 or more can also take advantage of a group discount.
Is Northern Lights Accessible?
Yes. All of our venues are accessible to those with disabilities.
Is Parking Available?
Yes, free parking is readily available. At our larger venues off-street park is offered. At our smaller venues, on-street parking is also available.
