Minnesota Premiere of Common Ground at Northern Lights
One of the most exciting moments of this year's Opening Night concert will be the Minnesota premiere of Common Ground, a vibrant new work by acclaimed American composer and oboist Alyssa Morris. Composed in 2026, Common Ground was commissioned by the internationally acclaimed OboeBass! duo—Carrie Vecchione, oboe, and Rolf Erdahl, double bass—through a Barlow Foundation Latter-day Saints Commissioning Grant. The duo will perform the work at Northern Lights Music Festival, giving Minnesota audiences one of their very first opportunities to experience this remarkable new composition. NLMF Alum Conan Yang to Perform with Bravura Philharmonic Orchestra
The Northern Lights Music Festival is proud to celebrate the continued success of alumn Conan Yang, who will appear as a featured soloist with the Bravura Philharmonic Orchestra in New Jersey on June 7, 2026. A student of NLMF Artic Director Veda Zuponcic, Conan, now 15 years old, will perform Liszt's Piano Concerto No. 1, as part of the orchestra's annual Concerto Extravaganza concert. The performance will take place at Princeton Alliance Church in Plainsboro, New Jersey, under the direction of conductor Chiu-Tze Lin. Northern Lights Alum Earn Top Honors at MTNA National Finals
Northern Lights Music Festival is proud to celebrate outstanding achievements by members of our artistic community at the recent MTNA Competition National Finals. First Place in the Young Artists Division Piano Vitalii Khairutdinov was awarded First Place in the Young Artists Category, one of the top distinctions in the competition. His performance demonstrated the highest level of technical command and musical artistry, placing him among the leading young pianists in the country. Northern Lights Music Festival Alumni Continue to Shine on the National Stage Northern Lights Music Festival alumni Samuel Cronk and Conan Yang have once again distinguished themselves at the highest level, winning the Eastern Division of the Senior PIano Duet Competition and advancing to the national finals. The duo will compete at the MTNA National Conference in Chicago this March. Both pianists are students of Veda Zuponcic, Artistic Director of the Northern Lights Music Festival, and their success reflects years of artistic growth nurtured through the Festival’s programs. Give to the Max Day Brings Donors Together This year’s campaign brought steady participation from supporters across the Iron Range and beyond. The Golden Ticket—a bonus prize awarded randomly throughout the 24-hour giving period—provided an unexpected boost, lifting the festival’s total and reinforcing the value of donor engagement during the event. Celebrating Success! Northern Lights is thrilled to highlight our distinguished alum, Rino Yoshimoto (NLMF 2016 & 2018), who has just been awarded Second Prize at the 58th Premio Paganini International Violin Competition in Genoa, Italy (Oct 14–26, 2025) A Growing List of International Honors Ms. Yoshimoto , born in Kobe in 2003, has been steadily gaining recognition on the world stage.
